The Fodor's Five

The five things you need to know before traveling to Delhi

# 1

Delhi’s older attractions truly deserve the hype.

Rest assured that the Red Fort, the Qutb Minar Complex, India Gate, Lodi Gardens, and Humayun’s Tomb, dating from the 13th to 17th centuries, consistently live up to the hype. Do not dismiss these iconic landmarks as cliched; they provide unparalleled insights into Delhi’s storied past.

# 2

Do as Delhiites do and take the metro.

Since its launch in 2002, Delhi’s metro service has become a staple for commuters. It is air-conditioned, safe, remarkably affordable, and lines zigzag to every corner of the city. While taking an auto-rickshaw (a three-wheeled motorized vehicle) or an app-based cab is an option, their relatively higher fares and the often-arduous haggling associated with autos, combined with city traffic, make using Delhi’s metro a more practical choice. However, be aware that Delhi's subway system shuts down between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m.

# 3

Do not leave Delhi without trying its legendary street food in the old city.

While Delhi offers a lavish fusion fare blending the best of east and west, its street food—especially in Old Delhi—is in a league of its own. From sizzling meat skewers and niharis (slow-cooked meat stews) to freshly made Mughal-influenced chaats (savory snacks) and stuffed parathas (fried flatbread with veggies), the old city offers a sensory feast of tastes, smells, and colors, all at affordable prices.

# 4

Delhi is scam central, so keep your guard up.

Alas, the warnings you have likely heard hold true: scams are rampant in Delhi. However, with a dose of common sense, steering clear of these tricks is entirely manageable. In areas like Old Delhi and Connaught Place, counterfeit guides, touts, and commission agents abound, attempting to direct visitors to commission-paying shops, hotels, and restaurants. By ignoring their advances and making your own choices, you can avoid paying more than you need to. Also, be wary of people at New Delhi Railway Station offering help out of the blue.

# 5

Stay central or south in Delhi.

With the air-conditioned metro, no part of the city is off limits. However, staying in the central or southern districts offers unmatched convenience, easy access to top attractions, and a vibrant local scene. Connaught Place and Karol Bagh are convenient central locations, while South Delhi, known for its quieter, leafier, and more sophisticated atmosphere, is ideal for families.
