We were there a few years ago as part of a longer trip around SA . We rented a car from Avis in Durban and dropped it off in Cape Town a couple of months later. The driving was easy enough though I would watch out for potholes, even on the major highways. Also, check your rental car thoroughly before setting off. The first one we were given seemed fine until we drove a few miles and it was quickly apparent that it had some major faults. Dont plans to drive straight off immediately!
For wildlife viewing we stayed in SanParks and were delighted with our decision. A good standard of self contained accommodation and we loved self driving the parks for game viewing. For the KZN part of the trip we set off from Durban to St Lucia and spent a few nights there with side trips to Cape Vidal and iSimangaliso. Cape Vidal had one of the best beaches I have seen anywhere in the world. From there we drove to Hluhluwe-iMfolozi and stayed three nights. It wasn't really enough to do all we wanted there and could easily have spent another day or two there.
We then drove cross country and stayed in a few places in the Drakensberg. This was more about the scenery rather than wildlife but just as spectacular. We visited Thendele, a small SanPark and also Clarens, Giants Castle and a few other places. A highlight was a side trip driving up the Sani Pass into Lesotho. Here is a link to the SA section of our bog (which I never got around to finishing!) which covers a few of the places we visited on that trip https://accidentalnomads.com/categor.../south-africa/
