Quebec, PEI & Nova Scotia
Hi All,
I've just started booking a last minute trip for a few weeks from now and could really use your insights and recommendations as I'm trying to get things booked in the evenings.
I'll continue to dig into the forums, but I'd like to at least get some of my questions down in case anyone is able to weigh in.
We're taking a New England/Canada cruise and then excited to stay a few days in Quebec City and then Montreal. We've never been to either! So many questions and not many that I can find answers to quickly. We don't need to see everything, just a few nice ideas for these places.
Montreal & Quebec
Are they easy to get around with public transportation and Ubers? Is there a nice neighborhood in each area that would allow us to get a sense of coming "home" in the evening to somewhere quiet but yet in a walkable neighborhood, close to things? (Upper West Side in NY or Georgetown in DC as examples) Do you have your favorite ways to spend a day, or a few cool things to see, favorite restaurants for breakfast, lunch, dinner... coffee.
I saw some accommodations in old town in QC that looked nice?
I assumed we'd go without rental car, but can consider if recommended and I'm planning to take the train from QC to Montreal if I can remember to call about our extra large luggage. Their site language repeats luggage is on an available space basis and 50lbs max for suitcase is all I can select on the website.
Prince Edward Island
I'm wondering if there's public transportation, shuttles, etc. that accommodate trips to the Anne of Green Gables museum and other sites. Or if you've done a tour you'd recommend please share. I'd really prefer not to do a crowded tour with the cruise group.
Sydney
I spent a couple of weeks in Nova Scotia in my 20's so we're going to rent a car in Sydney and revisit some of the places I remember. Hoping taxis are easily accessed from the port.
I don't have a plans for Halifax or Saguenay yet. Thanks in advance for any help!

How long will you be in port? If just a few hours you may be better off taking what the cruise company offers. I am not aware of public transportation to Cavendish.
FYI
We have only taken 1 cruise a while ago to Alaska. We were told by several experienced cruise travelers that if you book port travel on your own and the tour company does not get you back in time to catch the boat it’s on your dime. If it’s a cruise sponsored trip they will wait for you and or help you get to the next destination.

Hi,
PEI will be a tender port which could have us in port a little later. I'd booked a trip on Viator but the operator hasn't confirmed so it was just rejected and I'm back to square one with even fewer options now.
I'm still struggling to decide on accommodations for Montreal. I think we'll stay close to the port in Quebec City with an option that has washer/dryer so we can can catch up with cruise laundry before this portion of our trip.
But with Montreal, I can't figure out what area would be the best fit for us, but leaning towards the Old Montreal areas. I'd love quiet, close enough to metro/public transportation and a few coffee shops/restaurants. And then we can travel out to the things we want to see and come "home" in the evenings to a calmer environment. I'm having a very difficult time keeping these two trip segments separate! Similar layouts around the ports, etc.
Some things of interest:
The underground (reso), Mount Royal hike up the steps to see city, Bio Dome...
Still learning and eager to know what others consider must-sees for any of the places I've mentioned. Trying to figure out the difference between Metro, REM (like an express train in NYC?), & Train (via rail??)... Best app for finding way around once there? Restaurant recommendations for coffee and pastries, poutine and then any must-try Montreal cuisine.
Also have to figure out how to handle day in Saguenay, la baie. Only 1 cruise excursion option at this point so we'll be on our own.
Thanks!
