St Croix- Family of 5 stay in villa, but where?
Considering first week of January. Hotel prices quite high (saw many recs for The Buccaneer, but very high that week). Several nice villas on VRBO/Airbnb. But any suggestions about where on the island? Would be nice to be near nice beach and main town. Have been to many other Caribbean islands. How are the beaches on St Croix, restaurants? Looking to just relax on this trip, not looking for an exploring island. Puerto Rico might be another option.

Sorry you don't have many responses.
My only knowledge of St Croix is from our stay at The Buccaneer a few years ago. It was fabulous for our small family. We were celebrating a graduation and a birthday, and they took good care of us. They had already upgraded our three rooms when we arrived.

Did you call the Buccaneer directly? You can get a better deal by doing that.
I will say that St Croix is far from glamorous. These are my notes:
"We took a cab into town for dinner, and rented a car for one day to explore the island. Took a snorkel trip from its dock to Buck Island National Monument (Free snorkel gear provided by Buccaneer, and also kayaks.) Some family members took free scuba lessons on site in the pool, then went into town for an actual scuba boat trip. Otherwise we just lazed around the Buccaneer and enjoyed ourselves.
We really enjoyed The Buccaneer, on St Croix, for a week-long family celebration. We needed a US property, because one of us didn't have a current passport.
It's lovely, with great customer service, in a gorgeous setting, and an amazing breakfast buffet included. Snorkel gear, kayaks and boogie boards are complimentary at the resort.
A snorkel excursion to Buck Island picks up at the hotel dock. It is not an action-packed, all-inclusive, boozey place. Perfect for relaxing and feeling safe walking around.
We rented a car on-site for one day, to travel around the island, explore Rainbow Beach, the towns, beer-drinking pigs, and to visit the easternmost point of the U.S. It is easily done in one day. I'd say, in general, it's a very simple island and may not be attractive if you're looking for night-life and glamour.
We grabbed a bite at a beachside bar we liked, called Rhythms-- https://www.rainbowbeachstx.com/
We also took a cab into town one night for a very nice dinner at Savant. https://savantstx.com/
Most of us took free scuba lessons in the resort pool, then went into town to take a real scuba diving experience.
We all took a snorkel trip from the Buccaneer’s dock to Buck Island National Monument (Free snorkel gear provided by Buccaneer)
One thing I noticed while there, is that their little gift shop does not gouge you for items like flip flops, hats and sunscreen.
Complimentary bug repellant is provided in the rooms."

Thanks MoBro. We were also looking for a relaxing time, maybe some decent restaurants. But in the lack of responses, and quite a bit of searching available hotel options, we opted for elsewhere. Maybe another time. Had hoped for a VRBO on or near a good beach. But even the description of beaches was not so enthusiastic. I was hoping for a less developed, less expensive version of a place like Mustique, Anguilla, or Virgin Gorda- places we have been and liked.

It's too bad The Buccaneer doesn't fit the bill. It is small and very nicely managed.
It has nice beaches, free water equipment, great food and service, easy trip to Buck Island Reef, lots of places to relax, etc. etc.
Have you found an alternative yet? We're thinking of a beachside vacation, too
