Romoos and Splügen Best Swiss Tourism Villages of the year
In its search for the best tourism villages in the world, the UN World Tourism O-ganization, UN Tourism, has once again found what it is looking for in Switzerland. On 14 November 2024, the two Swiss villages Romoos and Splügen were designated Best Tourism Villages. This means that Swiss tourism can now boast a total of nine villages with this label.
Romoos LU and SplügenGR impressed the UN Tourism jury with their strong focus on the sustainable development of local tourism and various initiatives to preserve, promote and create value from their cultural heritage. The commune of Lens VS was also selected to take part in the Best Tourism Villages upgrade programme, which is being run by the UN Tourism Organisation for the fourth time.
Nine Best Tourism Villages in Switzerland
UN Tourism received a total of 264 applications from 63 member states for the Best Tourism Villages 2024 designation, awarded this year for the fourth time. The official award ceremony took place at the UN Tourism Executive Council in Cartagena de Indias (Colombia). Along with Andermatt, Gruyčres, Morcote, Murten, Saas-Fee, Saint-Ursanne and Val Poschiavo, which received the award in previous years, Switzerland now has nine Best Tourism Villages.
Tourism villages with traditional activities such as agriculture and forestry that use tourism as a means of promoting and preserving their cultural heritage and that are committed to sustainable tourism development were eligible to apply for the award. The jury, consisting of representatives from the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs SECO, the Swiss Tourism Federation and Switzerland Tourism, selected the six villages of Ernen (VS), Lavizzara (TI), Lens (VS), Romoos (LU), Splügen (GR) and Valendas (GR) in summer 2024 and put them forward as candidates to UN Tourism.
