Smaller towns/villages in Denmark

Hello!
I will be taking my 78 year-old mom to Denmark for her first visit to the motherland (we have lots of Danish ancestors!). I have traveled in Denmark before but only focused on Copenhagen and Aarhus. My mom is interested in seeing some smaller towns and villages. We will be spending several days in Copenhagen, but I would love to hear about any lovely experiences or recommendations of other places to stay and visit. We have five days to spend doing non-Copenhagen things. Thanks in advance for your help!

Funen?

I'm planning a similar trip for the Spring, so I haven't yet seen these places. But our itinerary is a week in Copenhagen, then a week in a small town called Middlefart on the island of Funen. The town has interesting history of it's own, plus it's well-located for easy daytrips to Odense, southern Funen (Faaborg and Svenborg), Jelling, and Ribe. We're renting a car when we leave Copenhagen, but I think everything would be equally accessible via train. Good luck.

I think there are such places but they are inherently a little dull. I'd suggest you look at Roskilde (still a city but the church and ship museum are both worth a visit) and then go to an island and maybe Rudkøbing. Your ancestors may have come from just one island of course.

Thanks for the information. I looked up Middlefart and it looks lovely! After reviewing a number of travel blogs, podcasts, etc., we have settled on visiting Ribe. We have booked accomodations for two nights, but will likely just have one full day there. We would like to stay in one more town aside from Ribe. As of now, we are looking at Faaborg, but haven't completely decided yet. I hope you have a wonderful trip and enjoy your time there! Thanks again for taking the time to reply.

Hi bilboburgler, thanks for the recommendations. We do have Roskilde on our itinerary, as my great-great grandfather and great-great grandmother were married in Roskilde (and they were first cousins! No noticeable genetic issues that I'm aware of, fortunately!). The church and museum look really great. As I mentioned in my other reply, we have decided to stay in Ribe and are looking at one more place. I'll look into Rudkobing as an option. Faaborg also comes highly recommended on some websites that I've been looking at. Thanks again for taking the time to respond to me.
