Though Lombok, 64 km (40 miles) east of Bali, is not as well known as its big sister, that may change as word gets out about this island's pleasures. From its port of Lembar, you can take regular shuttles to the gorgeous beaches of Senggigi and inexpensive taxis to visit the serene temples and gardens of Mataram, Lombok's sprawling capital city.
